Long-distance road trips in an electric vehicle used to come with a hidden passenger: anxiety. Every kilometer closer to zero felt like a countdown. But that era is over — if you plan properly. Here is exactly how to do it.
Know Your Real-World Range
Your EV’s official WLTP range is a best-case estimate. In the real world, factors like motorway speeds, outside temperature, air conditioning and cargo weight can reduce your range by 20–30%. Before any long trip, check your car’s real-world consumption figures — many EV communities track these by model and season.
A rule of thumb: plan with 80% of your WLTP range and you will almost never be caught off guard.
Plan Charging Stops Before You Leave
The biggest mistake EV drivers make is improvising charging stops. Use a route planning app like EV Pluggy to map out your full journey in advance — including where you will stop, for how long, and what battery level you will arrive with at each stop.
Aim to arrive at each charging station with at least 10–15% battery remaining. That gives you a buffer if a station is occupied or out of service.
Choose the Right Charger Type
Not all charging stops are equal. For long motorway stretches, look for DC fast chargers (50 kW and above) — ideally CCS2 for most European EVs. A 150 kW or 350 kW charger can add 100+ km of range in under 15 minutes.
Slower AC chargers (up to 22 kW) are better for overnight stops or meal breaks where you have an hour or more.
Build in Comfort Breaks
The best charging stops are the ones that align with natural rest breaks. A 20–30 minute charge at a motorway station that also has a café or restaurant means zero wasted time — you are charging and resting simultaneously.
EV Pluggy shows amenities near each charging stop, so you can plan your comfort breaks and charging stops together.
Have a Backup Plan
Even the best-planned trips can hit unexpected issues — a charger that is out of service, a queue at a busy station, or unexpected traffic. Always know the next charging option along your route so you are never stuck without a plan B.
The Bottom Line
Long-distance EV travel is genuinely stress-free when you plan it properly. The technology is there. The infrastructure is there. All you need is the right tool and a little preparation — and you will wonder why you ever found it stressful.
